Raising a child is expensive. Raising a child with special needs is EXTREMELY expensive. I’m the mother of a 5-year-old daughter who is blind due to Leber’s Congenital Amaurosis (LCA), and I found out very quickly that items made for low incidence disabilities such as blindness are often outrageously priced, since they can’t be mass marketed. In January, 2008 four Houston area mothers of blind children traveled to Washington, D.C. to inform members of Congress about current legislative issues of importance to the blind. Laura Weber of Friendswood, Kim Cunningham and Lety Flores of Pearland and Sally Thomas of Manvel took an early morning flight from Houston to Washington, D.C., excited about the prospect of making our voices heard in the halls of Congress. more...
